Research Description:

Epigenetic mechanisms are of central importance for the regulation of gene expression in mammalian genomes. The two major epigenetic marks, DNA methylation and histone modifications, lead to modulations of the chromatin structure though leaving the underlying primary DNA sequence unaffected. In my PhD thesis, I focus on understanding the regulation of the DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1) that faithfully propagates cell type specific DNA methylation patterns to the progeny after DNA replication. My main project is based on investigating the effects of mutations in DNMT1 that were found in patients suffering from hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type IE (HSANIE).
