Living in Munich

The Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität is located in one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. The city of Munich with its unique mixture of cosmopolitan flair and warmth is home to 1.3 million inhabitants, and remains the political, cultural, and economic capital of Bavaria. Over the last four decades Munich has turned into one of Europe's leading regions of science and economy. Many high-tech companies have their German or European head quarters in the Munich area, such as one of the most prominent German car manufacturers, BMW, and large international companies like Siemens, MAN, DASA, Aerospace and Krauss-Maffei. Nonetheless, it is still known to many as the "city with the kind heart".

Around 80.000 students are enrolled in Munich's two main universities, the Ludwig-Maximilian- Universität and the Technical University Munich, as well as in several colleges. Grosshadern-Martinsried is a suburb at the south-west border of Munich about 25 minutes from the centre by subway (U-Bahn) and bus.

Munich's sprawling parks make it one of the greenest cities in the world. The Olympiapark is the largest sport and leisure park in Europe (85.000 m2). To add to it, Munich is well known for its variety of museums, theatres and cultural events, of particular interest are the galleries of the Old, the New and the Modern Pinakothek, the Deutsches Museum, the biggest science museum in Europe. The National Theater (Nationaltheater), the legendary Kammerspiele, the opera, the symphony and the philharmony offer excellent performances. Restaurants and the famous bavarian beer gardens are numerous all over the city but are particularly concentrated in the parts called Schwabing and Haidhausen. The lovely bavarian landscape with beautiful lakes and the nearby Alps - visible from the university on bright days - offers a wide range of recreational activities. Several well-known castles, mountains, and churches are just a few kilometers away from Munich. Alpine skiing and mountaineering is available some 60 km south of the city. Each year in the end of September, Munich hosts the world famous Oktoberfest.
