Peroxisomal retrograde signaling in C. elegans

Peroxisomes participate in several key biological processes (such as beta-oxidation of fatty acids for energy production and degradation of toxic molecules such as hydrogen peroxide). These organelles are essential as defects in their biogenesis have been associated with a group of fatal diseases, the Zellweger Syndrome Disorders. Despite the importance of these organelles, how their protein quality control is achieved remains elusive.
Protein quality control in other cellular compartments (such as ER or mitochondria) has been shown to involve the communication between the cellular compartment and the nucleus. Using the model Caenorhabditis elegans and a combination of genetic and cell biological approaches, our aim is to understand how peroxisomes communicate with the nucleus in the context of peroxisomal protein quality control.
